drugThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration broadcasted the approval of the drug, Prolia, the first biotechnology drug likely to be prescribed by patients’ primary physicians not specialists.

The Executive Vice President for Research of Amgen Inc. , stated that Prolia is the first drug for osteoporosis treatment that is introduced into a general practice environment.

Amgen’s (NASDAQ: AMGN) bone-strengthening injection denosumab for postmenopausal women with osteoporosis is the generic competition to existing drug makers for osteoporosis, like Chilcott (Actonel), Eli Lilly (Forteo and Evista), Novartis (Reclast and Miacalcin), Merck (Fosamax), Roche (Boniva), and Warner.

It is known that denosumab was the most extensive and expensive in Amgen’s history. There are speculations on Prolia’s success to the market. Amgen will start selling Prolia within two weeks at a wholesale cost of $825 for a single 60-milligram injection, wholesale injections are given every six months.

It seems to be possible that the osteoporosis medications most in danger from Prolia are those indicated for women with osteoporosis who are more prone to fractures. Medical trending shows prediction of sales will glide as physicians go for the latest bone medicine.  On the contrary, it will also take time for primary-care doctors to ascertain about the medicine’s capabilities and be at ease recommending it.
