super bowl and heart attacksThe emotional stress that fans feel after watching their Super Bowl’s favorite team loss may trigger fatal heart attacks – this is particularly prevalent to those people who have already heart disease. According to a new study, stress generates a so-called fight-or-fight response, which causes sharp upticks in heart rate and blood pressure that usually leads to strains in the heart.

In addition, this is proven to be harmful, if not fatal for those people who have heart disease, and also to those people who are at risk due to factors such as obesity, smoking and diabetes.

The study was conducted by the researchers, especially those who are familiar with cardiology. The team analyzed the death records particular in Los Angeles, specifically from years 1980 to 1984, where Super Bowls are prevalent in most Los Angeles citizens. As a control, the team has also analyzed the same data from the corresponding days in the intervening years.

According to the results, in year 1980 where a specific Super Bowl event was analyzed, heart-related deaths upshot to 15% for men and 27% in women. This was also compared to the intervening years, and the same results have appeared. Moreover, the team also found that there was a significant increase in the death rates among people with ages 65 and older.

Robert A. Kloner, M.D., and the lead researcher of this study concluded, “Fans develop an emotional connection to their team, and when their team loses, that’s an emotional stress.” He further added that there is a brain-heart connection, and it is important for people to be aware of that.
