Drugs for Osteoporosis Gets FDA Review

According to the FDA’s advisers, drug makers for osteoporosis are now required to explain the period on which the patients must take in famous treatments so that to avoid side effects that is harmful.
Those drugs are recognized as biphosphonates, which included best selling brands such as Boniva, Atelvia, Actonel, Reclast and Osamax. The Food and Drug Administration will be determining later on whether those brands will be required to affirm the period on how long the patients must take in every drug. However, it is still not clear how long that might take.
FDA reports that last 2009, there were over five million prescriptions that were filled up for biphosphonates alone, wherein it can reverse dangerous thinning of bones, and prevent spine and hip fractures that cause pain which results severe problems in health.
There were a few studies that were reviewed by the panel of advisers to the FDA last Friday. From their reviews, they have found out that there were some patients who had suffered severe complications, which included unusual thighbone fractures, jawbone damage, and esophagus cancer following some years of taking in those treatments. Some patients have taken legal action and sued the makers of the recognized drugs.
The previous president of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, Dr. Elizabeth Shane stated that the side effects are just like atypical fractures and osteonecrosis of the jaw are identified as extremely rare especially when viewed in the concept of the quantity of people who took such drugs for osteoporosis.
