Diet drug Qnexa Effective or Not?

diet qnexa fda obesity drugThe diet pill Qnexa helps overweight patients with dreaded medical problems due to their weight to lose more pounds more effectively than a dummy pill. This is what a recent study published in the Lancet revealed.

While there is really nothing new to the study the suggestions that may be derived from it definitely are. Last October, FDA denied the Qnexa (approval of anticonvulsant drug topiramate combination with short-term diet drug phentermine). This was after FDA asked the company pushing approval of Qnexa, Vivus to perform additional research regarding the drug’s safety.

Vivus then released a statement saying that the findings published Online First in the Lancet … suggest that this promising new treatment has additional metabolic benefits. “Weight loss achieved with phentermine and topiramate was sustained during 56 weeks with improvements in blood pressure, lipids, glycaemia, and inflammatory markers,” the press release added.

FDA scientists however were not greatly impressed by the drug. In a June 17 memorandum they noted however that Qnexa “produced the expected improvements in blood pressure, lipids and glycemia.”

FDA now ordered Vivus to further and extend its trial and testing on Qnexa especially its effects on women who are expecting pregnancy.
