diabetesA new report has been released stating that “more than the nation’s adult population will have diabetes or the condition that precedes it by the year 2020.” This study is said to create more than $3 trillion health care expenses.

According to Mickey Molina, an El Paso Diabetes Association member, El Paso will likely to be hit harder other than any areas. Molina said, “Because of our demographics, the fact (El Paso) is primarily Hispanic, I think the numbers will be worse.”  This is further supported by the American Diabetes Association stating that “the incidence of diabetes among Hispanics is nearly double that of non-Hispanic whites.” Molina added that the cause was not yet identified, but he suspects that it is nearly related to diet.

Simon Stevens, the research group’s executive vice president, said in a statement, “Our new research shows that there is a diabetic time bomb ticking in America, but unfortunately, there are practical steps that can be taken now to defuse it.”  Stevens further explained, “Making a major impact on the pre-diabetes and diabetes epidemic will require health plans to engage consumers in new ways, while working to scale nationally some of the most promising preventive care models.”

The estimated cost will reach up to $250 billion. With this high amount of money needed, Molina suggested, “The only way to curtail diabetes is to prevent it.”
