Childhood Memories Likely to be Forgotten, Canadian Study Reveals

Childhood MemoriesAccording to a new research, most of the children can remember memories in their younger years and forget these when they get a little old.

A Canadian study, who conducted this research have taken a population of 100 children with ages ranging from 4 to 13, suggested that the events which took place before the age of 2 can be recalled. When these children were interviewed later in their lives, almost all of those memories were forgotten.

Also, they found out that most adults forget memories before the age of 3 or 4.

The researchers from the Memorial University in Newfoundland asked 100 children aged 4 to 13 to remember or recall their three earliest memories. The parents of those children were also asked to verify the answers of their children. The answers were kept in record and after two years, the same children were asked again about the same topic.

They found that either the children had given different answers on the first and second time they were asked or they couldn’t recall their earliest memories unless presented with prompts.

Dr. Carole Peterson, the lead author of the research stated, “What surprised us is that we would give these really detailed cues to the children about memories they had told us about two years previously and they would say ‘No, that never happened to me’.”

On the contrary, Peterson added that there are still more research to be done for us to be able to understand why we leave a lot of our childhood memories behind.
