The study looked into a number of two hundred adults who have lower back pain, and researchers found out that the participants involved in both classes has reported more progress in symptoms subsequent to three months compared to those who were only given a book of advice on how to manage and prevent the pain.

Health Research Institute’s Karen Sherman, who also led the study, stated that the study proved an option that is worth the try for patients with lower back pain.

Moreover, Sherman and colleagues explained that the discovery of stretching and yoga in easing pain and improved functioning for patients with lower back pain has about equivalent effects, meaning the two activities, possibly the stretching in yoga and not the breathing and relaxation, that helped improve the pain symptoms and functioning.

The study was conducted by dividing 228 adults who are experiencing long-lasting back pain into three groups.

The first two groups were asked to do either stretching classes for twelve weeks or weekly yoga and requested to practice all by themselves between class sessions. The classes focused more on strengthening and stretching their lower back and legs. The third group was only given a book which is related to topics about back pain, including lifestyle advice and exercise, and information on managing pains.

The study only lasted for twelve weeks. The participants went to group classes and reported notably lower scores on a questionnaire that is designed to measure how much pain obstructs with their day to day activities.

The participants who went through the 12-week program fell to about seven and those who only read the book had an average score of nine.

The yoga group reported sixty percent of people who said that there were improvements in pain, in comparison with the 46% who went stretching classes, and only sixteen percent for those who got the books.

After three months grace period, symptom improvements were almost alike in participants who had either yoga or stretching, and were better compared to the participants who had the book.
Experts now recommend that RLS or Restless Legs Syndrome, which millions of Americans have, may be connected to the increased risk of having high blood pressure.

According to a latest study, women who are middle-aged and having most recurrent of RLS situations were 41 percent more probably to develop high blood pressure, compared to those women without such disorder; and the frequency of pervasiveness of high blood pressure increased with the symptoms of the disorder.

The results they have acquired recommend strongly that RLS really increases the high blood pressure risk. However, researchers led by Salma Batool-Anwar noted that more extensive research should be done and is needed in order to verify the relation of the two variables.

Moreover, she explained that as the researchers of the study, they really cannot say if RLS is the primary cause of blood pressure to increase. However, she pointed out that they did not see an important association between the symptoms of RLS’ seriousness and the hypertension’s prevalence.

Individuals who suffer from RLS say that they experienced pulling, throbbing and other displeasing feelings in their legs at the moment they sit or lie down. The symptom frequently directs to the overpowering push in moving the legs to get away with such symptoms.

More women are prone to have RLS compared to men, even though symptoms can actually happen at any age, most common among middle-aged individuals.

Individuals who have RLS are said to have poor quality sleep, which further leads to depression, fatigue and other health problems linked to lack of sleep.

The study was conducted within nineteen years timeframe involving around 39,000 women with a mean age of 62.

According to the results, those women who took multivitamins or dietary supplements such as Vitamin B-6, zinc, iron, copper, magnesium and folic acid had on typical rate of a 2.4% increased possibility of death within the study’s timeframe.

Among all the supplements, iron had the highest risk rate linked with death.

On the other hand, one of the supplements, which are calcium, resulted to be a factor in reducing death risk.

The study did not actually look at the probable cause-and-effect dynamic directly. Researchers explained that the study was only conducted as an observational study, which is based primarily on self-reported use of supplement. Additionally, they say that a variety of factors apart from the supplement use could have affected the results.

Moreover, Dr. Jennifer Ashton, a medical correspondent in CBS News explained further that the study, like most of the study situations, can be misleading. She also affirmed that the study was only based on related results, not showing a cause-and-effect dynamic biologically.

It was a very large study conducted in Finland from years 1986 to 2004. There were almost 40,000 women who participated in the study with an average age of 62 years old. The findings presented that in this group, there was 85% of those women who took a minimum of one supplement per day.

In addition, they found out that there was a related increased death risk among those participants who took folic acid, copper, magnesium, vitamin B-6, iron and zinc.

Simply put, the study only showed that there is an increased death risk, but did not say the reasons behind it.
This is considered as a gift from them, hoping that it will give protection for athletes in the future against a progressive disease in the brain, which was associated to concussions.

According to the records, the former Buffalo Sabre Rick Martin, 59 years old who have died due to heart attack, is the recent professional athlete who was diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy. This is a condition caused by repetitive traumas in the head, also having elements of other diseases such as Lou Gehrig’s, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

However, even though Martin showed no symptoms of such diseases, the athlete’s brain has proven that revealing symbols of damage, which the researchers explain, would have directed to rage, dementia and impulsivity.

The co-director of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy in Boston University and the director of Bedford VA Medical Center’s neuropathology, Dr. Ann Mckee stated that Martin had comparatively mild chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Additionally, Dr. Mckee explained that although Martin had several proofs of this brain disease, at the age of 59 years, it was not that really on its progressive form.

Moreover, Mckee said that as the disease gets more complex, which really takes decades, then the experts would certainly see the alterations in emotionality, rage behavior and most of all, memory.

Chris Nowinski, Mckee’s co-director agreed that the case of Martin is presenting that even athletes like him who do not even involve themselves in fighting are at risk for such brain disease. He further noted that their study could be the start of encouraging in making adjustments so to make a game safer for its athletes, and prevent such brain diseases.

The study was released in the Journal of Pediatrics. In the study, they have conducted a research which involved about 75 kids aging three to eight years. The group was divided randomly into two groups: the first group was asked to watch three TV commercials, one featuring the French fries of McDonald’s, and a cartoon show. The second group was asked to also watch commercials, one featuring the apple dippers of McDonald’s with a low-fat caramel sauce, and cartoons.

The study also involved the parents of the children. The parents were assigned randomly to either remain neutral about their choice, permitting their children to select whatever kind of food they wanted, or advise their children to select the more healthy choice, which are the apples. The kids were made known to two photos of food and were given a coupon for the food they have selected.

Among the children who have seen the apple commercial, there was 33% who selected the fries when their parents persuaded the more healthy option and 46% chose fires when their parents were neutral. On the other hand, among the children who have seen the fries’ commercial, 55% chose apples when they were persuaded by their parents to select apples and 71% selected fries when their parents were neutral on their option.

Christopher Ferguson, the lead author of the study explained that the kids were obviously influenced by the TV commercials they were assigned. However, the parents are not that powerless.

Ferguson further added that the parents have the advantage when it comes to the food choice of their kids that is if they remain consistent with their decision of directing their kids to healthy eating.

Chiropractors have already warned that a new situation named as “text neck” is on the increase because of the quantity of time the individuals spend with their tablet computer screens and mobile phones.

According to the report, the problem, which is caused by bending the neck for lengthened periods of time, can actually be the main reason of a permanent arthritic damage, especially if it still continues without undergoing any treatment at all.

The experts have spoken explaining that situations of having a recurring strain injury are increasing in figures as popularity of gadgets such as tablet computers and smart phones like iPad are increasing.

Mostly in strict situations, the muscles can sooner or later adapt to the bended position, which makes it agonizing to make the neck straighten out appropriately.

One of the chiropractors stated that her company had taken care of thousands of patients for such condition. The “text neck” can also further lead to wrist, shoulder and arm pain and headaches.

Freedom Back Clinics’ Racheal Lancaster agreed that the new condition “text neck” is caused by the neck that is being bended for a longer period of time.

Lancaster further added that the number of people who are suffering from such condition is on the rise as the usage of tablet computers and smart phones are also increasingly becoming famous.

“Text neck” is a condition that occurs because the “joints and neck tissues are not built to endure being bended for a long period of time.” Spending too much hours going over down at a screen such as tablet computers and phones situates them to too much stress.

According to Zhou Yang PhD and Kenneth Thorpe PhD from Atlanta’s Emony University, Medicare’s expenses could be lessened by a net of $15.1 billion within the group of 60 to 64 years old obese and overweight people, supposing an efficiency seen in a current intervention trial based on the community, wherein participants had a standard body weight loss of 4.2 percent. Those participants have cardiovascular or “pre-diabetes” risk factors.

They have calculated that the lifetime net savings could reach up to $11.9 billion with the 55 percent participation they had.

Moreover, Yang and Thorpe accounted that Medicare has currently added “wellness benefit” in line with the Affordable Care Act, which covers up a yearly visit, a care plan that is personalized, and a referral whenever compulsory. However, this new benefit does not consist of payment for community-based or commercial programs like diet-and-exercise that support health care.

They further noted that without payment for programs like that, the new benefit will remain deficient. Yang and Thorpe proposed that Medicare develop its new benefit so that it will contain in it the compensation for the planned program and other certified programs for behavior change.

Earlier this month, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services took a way in planning that Medicare cover obesity counseling especially to those in the high-intensity level by physicians.
However, the researchers are still confused with the reason as to why this could be helpful, believing that several of the advantages could simply root from the effect of the sweetness that comes with eating it.

This is considered as the largest research review ever carried through regarding the matter found that chocolate eating is associated with a 37 percent reduction in the probabilities of building up cardiovascular diseases. The research also stated that at least two squares of chocolate should be eaten to reduce such diseases.

Moreover, those people who pamper themselves appear to have 29 percent drop with regard to the risk of stroke, in comparison with those who ate less than two squares in a week-long period.

The research was spearheaded by Dr. Oscar Franco together with his colleagues at Cambridge University, reviewing seven studies about the efficiency of chocolate consumption on lesser risk of heart disease.

The review engaged about a hundred thousand participants, also included drinks, desserts, chocolate bars and biscuits.

According to Dr. Franco, the more beneficial in several studies appears to be dark chocolate, since it probably has higher levels of cocoa. Chocolate alone consists of around 300 various chemicals; however it attempts to separate the most efficient have until now failed short.

Moreover, Dr. Franco stated that the complexity of foods and the various ingredients interrelate in producing an effect. Furthermore, eating chocolate discharges endorphins in the brain in order that it could be a subject that chocolate is enhancing the quality of life of all people.
This mindset might probably be harming employees and employers just the same through means of convincing people who have sleeping disorder to pull them to sleepwalk and work throughout the day.

There were about 7,428 employees all over United States that were part of the research’s survey. The researchers found out that 23 percent of the population have experienced some type of insomnia like nighttime waking or difficulty in falling asleep, not more than three times within a week during the last month, at least thirty minutes at maximum.

It is not surprising anymore that the sleep problems identified are carried even into the workplace. People who have sleeping problems were consistent being tired in the workplace. As a result, these people cost their employers by losing productivity annually, which is equivalent to seven to eight days of work, corresponding to an average salary of about $2,280 for each person.

Ronald Kessler, PhD the lead author and also a psychiatric epidemiologist in Harvard School agreed that majority of the participants in the research did not miss work physically because of insomnia. He says that it is because they showed up in the workplace too tired, resulting to inefficiency in doing their jobs.

Around five years ago, less than half of the hospitals got those clogged arteries of the patients opened that quickly.

The researchers also found that compared to 96 minutes in 2005, the time it took to treat patients with heart problems is only 64 minutes in 2010.

Several hospitals are now moving at a warp pace. A patient named Linda Tisch was treated for only sixteen minutes after having a heart attack just this month. Emergency responders had called ahead of time in order to gather up a group of heart experts.

According to the patient, when she arrived at the hospital, they had a short exchange and she was brought directly to the Operating Room.

The case of Tisch was not just coincidence. After Tisch’s case, the hospital took another stricken patient for only 26 minutes.

Dr. Harlan Krumholz, a cardiologist at Yale and also the one who led the study, accounted that Americans who are experiencing heart attacks can now be certain that they will be treated fast particularly in almost all hospitals of this nation.

In addition, Krumholz noted that the most significant detail with this development is that everything happened without any use of money incentives or a punishment threat.

The development was done through the initiative of private groups and the government to lead the research on reducing the time of treatment on heart attacks and began campaigns in convincing hospitals to do this thing.
