A new study recommends that children with ADHD or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are more possibly to have problems in writing like poor grammar and spelling compared to other peers. The difference may principally be striking among girls having ADHD.

Dr. Slavica Katusic, the author of the study from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, explained that the disorder of written-language is a type which was overlooked, compared to math and reading problems.

Additionally, Katusic noted that writing is considered as a serious skill for success academically, as well as behavioral and social well-being. If the writing problem cannot be detected earlier and tackled with children with ADHD, then those children will suffer longer when they reach adulthood.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that about ten percent of children four to seventeen years old in the United States have ever been spotted with ADHD. The percentage has been increasing for the recent years.

The new study was conducted by looking at about 6,000 children, having everyone born between 1976 and 1982 in Rochester and who were still living there after five years old.

Katusic and her team followed the children’s records on tutoring, medical and school in order to observe which children confirmed ADHD symptoms. In addition, the research team also looked at the performance of the children’s tests on reading, general intelligence, and writing through reaching high school.

Generally, there were 379 children who fit ADHD criteria. More than 800 children scored very poor on writing abilities tests.

The authors accounted that planning and memory problems among children with ADHD may possibly have an effect on the process of writing for ADHD children, saying that the disorder has been associated with learning disorders in earlier years.

The reason may be partially because those children are hyperactive, inattentive and distractible. Also, coordination and motor skills problems may possibly be part of the blame.

According to a new research, caffeine has been found to modify the gene’s activity engaged in the cells’ destruction that have DNA damage; this therefore may more probably to turn out to be cancerous.

A person from the Rutgers University’s department of chemical biology, Allan Conney, examined the idea through the means of creating mice that are genetically modified (GM) whose ATR genes were lacking. These were then exposed to UV light up until they build up skin cancer. After having nineteen weeks of exposure to UV light, Conney found out that the GM mice had built up 69 percent lesser tumors compared to those with ATR genes that are functioning completely. Additionally, the GM mice’s tumors built up after three weeks compared to the regular mice.

All the mice had built up tumors, primarily a non-melanoma cancer type named SCC or Squamos Cell Carcinoma, after 34 weeks of exposure to UV light.

The study’s findings can be found in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The New Jersey skin cancer is already recognized as an ordinary disease. There are about 100,000 non-melanoma cases that were recorded in UK last 2008, and not more than 12,000 cases for malignant melanoma, which is more serious, according to the Cancer Research UK. These kind of cancers can be impacted through the UV light’s over-exposure, which further lead to the damaging of skin cells’ DNA that causes errors whenever the cells divide.

Moreover, Conney explained that all of the findings recommend the prospect that caffeine when possibly applied to the skin would cause an inhibitory effect on skin cancer that is sunlight-induced. Additionally, caffeine also has properties of sunscreen on the ATR pathway’s effects.
